Safeguarding

Two-week child protection inspections to start in May

Ofsted has finalised plans to begin two-week long spot checks of local authority child protection services from May.

 

The inspectorate's revised inspection framework of child protection will double the number of local authority case files that inspectors scrutinise. There are also plans to have a greater focus on children's experiences.

Course outline: 

This event is for leaders and managers and those who hold responsibility for safeguarding within voluntary sector organisations. It will provide an update on local and national safeguarding policy and procedure.

The session will cover:

  • Tools and Support to Help You Meet Your Responsibilities - learn about the Safe Network Standards (see page 3) and the tools and resources that have been created to help you meet and demonstrate your safeguarding responsibilities
  • National Policy and How it Affects Your Group - an update on the Vetting and Barring scheme and the Independent Safeguarding Authority - are you aware of your responsibilities as an employer?
  • Safeguarding Procedure in the Local Area - find out about the role and responsibilities of the LSCB and the resources available to support your organisation.

New Rep on the Local Safeguarding Children Board for Northamptonshire

Following the recent poll held amongst voluntary and community groups in the county, Ann Bodsworth of Northampton Women's Aid has been elected third sector representative on the Local Safeguarding Children Board for Northamptonshire.

Congratulations to Ann on her appointment to this role.


Neglect

What is Neglect?

Working Together 2010 defines Neglect as:

"A form of Significant Harm which involves the persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical and/or psychological needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of the child's health or development.

The session will cover:

Level 1 & 2 Safeguarding for Early Years & Childcare Practitioners - North Leicestershire - 3.03.12

Course outline: 

This one day courses, run by Leap UK, aims to identify how to recognise signs and symptoms of child abuse, what action to take and how to record and refer child protection concerns. This course is a thorough one day programme that has been designed to support all those working and having regular contact with children. This is a fully inclusive programme for anyone who works in full day care, pre-school, playgroup, family support centres, childminders, community groups etc. The course aims to enhance awareness and encourage good practice.

All our courses are in line with the latest government legislation and guidance including "Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010" and are fully compliant with local Safeguarding Children Board (SCB) requirements. They are compliant with Ofsted, the children's workforce development council (CWDC), Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Section 11 of the Children Act 2004.

Learning outcomes:

  • To understand your responsibility for safeguarding children within early years
  • To recognise how your own personal knowledge and feelings may affect your approach to child abuse
  • To understand and describe the 4 types of abuse
  • To recognise the signs, symptoms and indicators of abuse and neglect
  • To respond effectively when children want to tell or disclose
  • To record and refer child protection concerns following the correct protocols
  • To identify the roles, responsibilities and processes in place nationally and locally for safeguarding children
  • To understand and be able to work with policies and procedures within your setting

 

Additional Information:

All training will take into account a range of adult learning styles and will include practical exercises, interactive tasks and tutor input. Each course will have a comprehensive workbook and a list of reading and websites.
The duration of the course is 5 hours with a maximum group size of 20 people. The trainer's are fully qualified tutors with experience of Early Years and have completed the NSPCC Training for Trainers in Child Protection programme.
