Safeguarding is not just about Child Protection (protecting children from suspected abuse and neglect) it's also about minimising the risk of harm and accidents, having safe recruitment procedures, having a code of conduct for staff and volunteers and having the right polices and procedures in place to deal with issues if they occur.
Click here to see a checklist of the main safeguards an organisation is expected to have in place.
Child Protection is about protecting individual children who are suffering or at risk of suffering or significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect.
Abuse and neglect are forms of maltreatment of a child by either inflicting harm or failing to prevent it. Children and young people may be abused by adults or other children, by a family member or friend, someone in an institution or a stranger.
Disabled children are more vulnerable to abuse and neglect than non-disabled children. For information about safeguarding disabled children click here.
If you do have concerns that a child or young person is being harmed or at risk of harm then you should follow the Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures which can be found by clicking on the links
Leicestershire and Rutland Safeguarding Children Board
Leicester City Safeguarding Children Board - Site currently under construction, follow guidance on Leicestershire and Rutland site.
Everyone has a responsibility to keep children and young people safe and by ensuring your organisation has safeguarding policies and procedure in place you will be helping to protect children and young people, help your staff and volunteers know what to do if they are worried and will show that your organisation is responsible.
Additionally if you want to receive any kind of public money or are applying for charitable status you will need to be able to show that you are doing everything you can to safeguard the children you work with. Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 makes this a statutory requirement for all organisations that receive public money.
